Shin Rin Yoku/Forest Therapy

August 12, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am

$15.00
The Hallway

August 12, 2017 9-10:30 am

Shin rin yoku is a term that means “taking in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing.” It was developed in Japan during the 1980s and has become a cornerstone of preventive health care and healing in Japanese medicine. Researchers primarily in Japan and South Korea have established a robust body of scientific literature on the health benefits of spending time under the canopy of a living forest. Now their research is helping to establish shinrin-yoku and forest therapy throughout the world.

The idea is simple: if a person simply visits a natural area and walks in a relaxed way there are calming, rejuvenating and restorative benefits to be achieved.

Any time in nature is beneficial. But we can teach you techniques that help you gain the maximum in relaxation and enjoyment during your walk.

“The woods are lovely, dark and deep”….and good medicine for our civilized bodies, minds, and souls! Connect with your inner and outer nature through mindfulness and being present. This program will teach you many techniques to maximize your restorative experience in nature.

What to Expect:

  • A leisurely walk of less than one mile on well-maintained trail, most of which is under forest canopy.
  • A series of guided invitations to help awaken the senses and reconnect with Nature.
  • Walks for forest bathing typically last one to three hours. Our class will last about 90 minutes and will introduce you to many techniques that you can then continue to practice on your own.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How strenuous will it be?

The walks are not strenuous at all. We cover a maximum of about half a mile, often less, over an extended time period, on an easy trail.

Is it still on if it is raining?

The walk will still be on if it’s raining, unless it is a really big downpour or violent storm. If it is raining it’s important to have a waterproof shell including pants, and many people bring umbrellas also.  Rain often enhances sensory experience and makes for some of our most memorable walks.

What should one bring?
We suggest bringing a snack or light lunch and water bottle, or if the day is cold you might want to consider bringing a thermos with a hot drink.

If I need to leave early is that ok?

People do sometimes leave early, just let your guide know when you are leaving.
